Atlantic Mackerel

Latin name: Scomber Scombrus

Atlantic mackerel is an oily pelagic species found in abundance along both sides of North Atlantic. Mackerel is a shoaling fish, which makes it easy to capture throughout the catching season. Mackerel starts its movement after modest winter feed to the Spanish grounds, where it spawns, and is then headed back to North afterward, where the main feeding season occurs in June-August in Icelandic and Greenlandic waters. The fish caught during the summer period is quite soft and is used mainly for canning and frying, with some August fish suitable for cold smoking. In Autumn, mackerel reaches its best condition and moderate fat content, and it is captured by both trawl and purse-seine fleets in Norwegian, Faroese, EU, and UK waters. Fish caught in November-January satisfies the quality needs of the most demanding markets. Mackerel is a perfect fish for smoking, canning, pickling, and frying.
